A furious motorist beat up an 81-year-old woman after he became stuck behind her as she drove along at 5mph.

Patricia Pearson was left with cut cheeks, swollen lips and lumps on her forehead as Usman Yasin, 30, slapped her across the face. And he only stopped when a passerby intervened.

Yet incredibly Yasin claimed he had only acted in self-defence, telling police she had hit him first, a court was told

Mrs Pearson was on her way to visit her husband in a care home as Yasin struggled to overtake her in a residential street in Burton upon Trent, Staffs.

But once he did, he slammed on his brakes and blocked the road.

Victim Rebecca Caine

A YOUNG West Yorkshire woman woman killed after an asylum seeker allegedly drove the wrong way down a motorway was a university-educated aspiring model, her family said today.

Rebecca Caine, 20, from Birstall near Leeds, was a back seat passenger in a Chevrolet Matiz, when the vehicle was involved in a head on collision with a Renault Megane, coming the wrong way up the motorway, allegedly driven by Zimbabwean Wilfred Museka.

Miss Caine, known as Becky, died in the crash but the driver of the Matiz and two other passengers suffered only minor injuries.

The Chevrolet was heading east towards Leeds when the collision occurred at 3am on Sunday, near to junction 21 of the M62, near Milnrow, Greater Manchester.

Museka, 31 of Powell Street, Clayton, Manchester appeared at Bury Magistrates’ Court today charged with causing death by dangerous driving and was remanded into custody.

Two members of a Sri Lankan gang which stole £235,000 worth of fuel from filling stations across the south of England were jailed for a total of four-and-a-half years today (FRI).

Pathmasri Sivakumar, 33, and Maruthy Ramkumar, 32, were caught red handed buying £150 of diesel using a cloned Allstar payment card by undercover police.

They were part of a huge conspiracy involving thousands of purchases at garages ranging from Bristol to East Sussex and Kent and as far north as Oxfordshire.

More than 750 litres of the fuel was stored dangerously under a block of flats in Colindale, northwest London, before it was sold off.

Sivakumar and Ramkumar, who both have previous convictions for dishonesty in this country, were linked to vehicles involved in thefts of around £143,000 of fuel.

A van driver was chased by police as he sped through the city, ignored red traffic lights and drove the wrong way up a one-way street.

Dorin Sokoli was travelling at 50mph in 30mph residential streets in Evington and separately caused two cars to swerve.

Sokoli, an Albanian illegal immigrant, admitted at Leicester Crown Court to dangerous driving, failing to stop when required by the police and having no insurance.

He was sentenced to a two-year community order, with 100 hours of unpaid work, and banned from driving for 12 months.

The court was told the pursuit began at 8am on July 27 after officers became suspicious on seeing the defendant driving a van with car trade registration plates.

Victim Les Bowes

A MAN has told how his neck was broken by a taxi driver in a savage attack.

Les Bowes was beaten with a metal bar by the black-cab driver, breaking two bones in his neck and three in his face.

Doctors said he could have been killed or paralysed.

Mr Bowes, 57, said: “I know I have been very lucky. I could have died or been in a wheelchair for the rest of my life.

“The doctors said I was very seriously injured.”

The taxi driver, Pishtiwan Hamed, has admitted unlawfully wounding Mr Bowes and is due to be sentenced next month.

Mr Bowes spent two weeks in hospital, undergoing surgery to fit a 4in screw in his neck to hold his bones in place.

A TAXI driver has walked free from court after blaming the stress of being robbed at gunpoint for attacking a passenger with a wheel brace.

Preston Crown Court heard Khawar Sohail, 33, flipped out and started attacking his three passengers with a metal device for no reason on December 20.

Sohail admitted assault occasioning actual bodily harm, criminal damage and carrying an offensive weapon after picking up a fare from the Premier Inn hotel in Chorley town centre.

The court heard Sohail, of Eaves Lane, Chorley, collected a businessman and two of his business associates from Germany and was asked to drive them to the Blue Elephant Indian restaurant in Dawbers Lane, Euxton.

A TAXI driver jailed for eight years for sexually assaulting women passengers had been stripped of his licence – but twice won appeals allowing him to continue working.

Zahoor Mahmood, aged 40, was described as a ‘sexual predator’ when he was jailed yesterday for sexually assaulting two women he picked up on nights out in Sheffield.

The father-of-four, who worked for City Taxis, attacked both women within three weeks last summer.

He picked his first victim up in Carlisle Street, Attercliffe, on June 19. However, instead of taking her home, he locked her in his cab for more than two hours, got into the back with her and tried to get her to snort cocaine to get her ‘in the mood’.

Three weeks later, he spotted a 17-year-old girl walking home after a night out. He pulled up alongside her and said ‘a pretty young girl’ should not be walking alone.

A lorry driver has been jailed for eight months and disqualified for three years after driving the wrong way down the M6 for 10 miles.

Pal Korbely, 50, of Hungary, admitted dangerous driving and driving a motor vehicle whilst under the influence of alcohol at Birmingham Crown Court.

Three lorry drivers formed a blockade to stop Korbely near to junction 10 of the M6, at Walsall, late on 7 July.

Judge Paul Farrer QC said the drivers would each receive a £250 reward.

He said: “They are to be commended for their fast thinking and brave actions which may have saved lives.”

The court heard that Korbely, who was driving without headlights, had drunk home-made plum brandy before driving his lorry.

Seven men have been arrested and one is in hospital after a vicious attack in a street.

A group of Asian men got out of a red Toyota Corolla and set upon the occupants of a silver vehicle with sticks. Police were called to the incident, in Redcliffe Street, Keighley , shortly after 5pm on Tuesday.

Minutes later officers attended a crash involving the same Toyota and a blue Ford Focus in Green Head Lane, Utley. Four Asian men from the Toyota were seen running away. Two occupants of the Focus were still at the scene when officers arrived.

Seven local men –- two aged 18, two 19, one 20-year-old and the others 35 and 37 – were later arrested on suspicion of affray.

RAPIST Marcin Szwedek has been jailed after subjecting his victim to a ‘terrifying’ seven-hour ordeal.

The Polish national was today starting a 16-year sentence after a jury convicted him of four counts of rape.

Liverpool Crown Court heard how 31-year-old Szwedek drove his victim from a house in Crewe to a field, where he repeatedly raped her.

She only managed to escape and raise the alarm after he fell asleep in his car, where police later found him.

Witnesses reported how the woman had tried to get out of Szwedek’s car as he drove at high speed through Crewe on the evening of February 7.

At one point she was dragged along the road while hanging from the open passenger door.
