Jailed for 10 years: Ayad Mahmoud will then be deported

A MUM today declared the streets of Sheffield a safer place after a monster who kidnapped and raped her 14-year-old daughter was caged.

She spoke out after failed Iraqi asylum seeker Ayad Mahmoud, aged 35, was jailed for 10 years and told he is to be deported at the end of his sentence.

Mahmoud, of Burngreave Road, Burngreave, was convicted of kidnap and two counts of rape at Sheffield Crown Court – after denying he had touched the young girl.

The brave victim, who is now 15, was forced to relive her ordeal by testifying against him and enduring a cross examination grilling.

Today her mum and a senior detective praised the youngster for seeing the case through, and said she may have saved other girls from falling prey to the “predator“.

Mahmoud – who was appealing against a decision refusing to grant him asylum when he struck – had befriended the girl and her friends before abducting the teenager and raping her in the grounds of the Northern General Hospital.

Her frantic mum, who tried to find her after the alarm was raised, said: “It was the longest hour of my life knowing she had been taken against her will. I didn’t think we would get her back. I didn’t know what his intentions were but I feared the worst.

“The streets of Sheffield are a lot safer without him.

“We hadn’t really thought about what sentence he would get. All my daughter was worried about was whether he would be allowed back to Sheffield on his release, but now that he is to be deported she hasn’t got to think about that anymore.

“It was hard for my daughter to go through with the case but she didn’t want the same thing to happen to anyone else. If he had got away with it we are convinced he would have done it again.

“It wouldn’t surprise us if there are more victims out there because he seemed to know what he was doing. He was very clever and manipulative the way he made friends with the girls.”

Det Insp Dave Mayfield, of West Bar CID, said: “He took the opportunity to come to the UK to seek sanctuary and then went on to target young girls and to commit these offences.

“He was a predator, and it may well be the way he befriended this girl’s group was grooming with a view to committing these offences.”

DI Mayfield said Mahmoud drove the teenagers around in his car before dropping all but his victim off at one of their houses. She remained in his car chatting, waiting for her friends, but he drove off before they returned and refused to let her out.

Mahmoud attacked the terrified teenager in his car in the grounds of the Northern General Hospital after driving her around the city for an agonising 40 minutes.

At one point he stopped his car outside a flat on London Road and tried to drag the petrified youngster inside after telling her what he planned to do to her.

Her alarmed friends rang her mum to report the kidnap, but the youngster’s mobile phone battery was dead.

Detectives initially struggled to track down Mahmoud – known only as ‘Alex’ by his victim and her friends – but when results of a DNA check came through it emerged he had been questioned by police in the past.
