DETECTIVES are investigating an incident in which a woman was attacked and sexually assaulted.

The 23-year-old victim was walking along Princess Parkway in Northenden, in the early hours of Saturday morning when she realised she was being followed.

The man following her had approached her earlier that morning, at about 12.15am, as she walked from Alexandra Park opposite the bus depot. He had asked her for a cigarette, but she didn’t have any, so walked on.

As she approached the bridge over the River Mersey the man began chasing her and attacked her, kicking her to the floor. He then exposed himself to her and tried to sexually assault her, but she managed to fight him off and he ran away.

Detective Constable Dominic Heslop said: “This was a horrifying incident for the woman involved, and she was lucky to have escaped without being more seriously assaulted.”

The man is described as black, aged 23-25, about 5ft 5in tall with long black braided hair, a small nose with a slight moustache. He was of slim to medium build and was wearing a black North Face waist-length jacket with a white emblem on the front, black Nike air-bubble trainers and black jogging pants. He spoke with a local accent.

Anyone with any information about this incident is asked to contact Wythenshawe CID on 0161 856 4853 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
