Radical cleric Abu  Qatada was refused bail last night over fears Al Qaeda militants could help him go on the run from the police and MI5 during the Olympic Games.

A judge said statements on jihadist websites indicated the cleric’s supporters were prepared to spring him from house arrest if he were released.

He also said that if Qatada did abscond, the police and security services will be so stretched during the London Games they might struggle to track him down.
