An asylum seeker bludgeoned his ex-wife to death in west London because she refused to back his application to stay in the UK, a court heard.

Salah Nashia, 52, staged a “prolonged and sustained” hammer attack on artist Ghada Habib at her flat in Uxbridge in September 2010, it is claimed.

Jurors at the Old Bailey were told that he then searched her flat for money, stole her jewellery box and used it to try to seduce another woman.

Prosecutor Alex Lewis said: “Towards the end of 2010 he was running out of time, running out of options.
