AN Algerian robber who was also a sex offender has won taxpayer-funded compensation after complaining he was held while authorities battled to deport him.

The High Court ruled the UK Border Agency was wrong to keep Aziz Lamari locked up, even though he had absconded three times in nine months.

A judge yesterday found Home Secretary Theresa May in contempt of court for failing to release Lamari, 22, last month.

The Court of Appeal heard how asylum seeker Lamari had repeatedly gone missing before being arrested and jailed for indecent exposure and robbery. He was detained ready for deportation after his sentence and by the time the High Court began hearing his compensation claim in May this year he had been held for over 17 months. His payout will be set by the High Court at a later date.
