CCTV IMAGES have been released after a thief posing as a customer snatched a gold chain from the neck of a shop assistant in Birmingham last month.

The images feature a man who police would like to speak to in connection with the incident which happened at Jays Newsagents, Dudley Road on Monday 20 August.

It is believed that the offender came into the shop to make a purchase shortly before the theft.

He returned to the shop at around 6.30pm and as the same member of staff came to serve him, he leaned over the counter and snatched the chain from the victim’s neck.

The thief is described as black, in his late teens and around 5ft 7ins tall. At the time of the incident he was wearing a black track suit.

DC Amir Abid, from Birmingham CID, said: “We are appealing to anyone who can identify the man to call us.

“It appears that the man may have spotted the chain and after making a previous purchase and decided to come back to the store to steal the chain.

“If you know who he is then please call us on 101. Alternatively you can contact Crimestoppers anonymously by calling 0800 555 111.”
